7 things your visitors will hate about your website
Before you spend your hard earned money on getting your website designed, developed and out there on the world wide web, consider these important things that will ruin it.
- Have a contact/feedback form for visitors to fill out that you don’t answer.
There’s nothing more frustrating than going to all the effort to filling out a website’s form only to have it ignored/not answered. If you can’t answer your emails within 2 days then don’t advertise your email address… end of story! - An “Under Construction” page or “Coming Soon” page or “Come Back Soon” page that just sits there and doesn’t change.
If your website isn’t actively being developed, don’t try to fool your visitors with a page indicating things are about to change or ask them to come back. After the 20th time of checking back eventually they won’t bother coming back… ever! - Poor navigation that makes it hard to find what they’re looking for.
If you build it they will come, if they have to spend more than 5 seconds and 3 clicks to find it they will leave! - A distinct lack of obvious Contact Details.
Similar to the previous point. If a visitor wants to contact you they want to do it NOW! Don’t make it hard for them, make it really, really easy. - Slooooooow websites due to stuff that really doesn’t matter.
Large or lots of images or silly flashy images make good websites slow, and slow websites are really bad websites. Keep it simple, clean and professional. - Believe that the website is about pleasing your inner creative genius, rather than your visitors.
Your visitors don’t care for things like your favourite quote, your joke of the day or your opinions on matters unrelated to your business. They want accurate, useful information in a simple, easy to read way… end of story. - Have a link to your “Prices” and then don’t have them there.
O.K. you want to know why people REALLY like websites? It’s so they can anonymously check out your business and without you or anyone else knowing, AND to find out how much things cost. So, if you have a ‘Prices’ page then make sure you have your prices and not some annoying “please contact us for our latest prices”… If you don’t have your prices listed they don’t need to be told to contact you to get them! - Over estimate your inner creative genius and get too involved in your website design process.
You have got to read this… you’re visitors won’t hate you, but I will!
I know some of these points may seem a bit harsh but consider that visitors may view lots of websites and if yours annoys them more than the others they’ll leave your website in a matter of seconds and move on to the next one.
